12 Christmas Characters: Zechariah

Welcome! In light of the holiday season, I wanted to share the Christmas story, but I didn't want to look at in the traditional way. Christmas isn't about Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus, or Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, it is about the birth of Jesus. By Christmas Eve, I will focus on 12 people surrounding Jesus' birth and their role in the story. I welcome your thoughts and hope to express why I love Christmas so much.

First up: Zechariah.

Zechariah was married to Elizabeth, Mary's Cousin. This couple was older and couldn't have children. It was said they were obedient to the Lord. Zechariah was serving in the temple, similarly to serving as a pastor or leader in a church, and an angel named Gabriel appeared to him. Gabriel told Zechariah that Elizabeth would become pregnant and they would have a baby. They were to name the baby John and he would have the spirit of Elijah and tell others about Jesus.

Zechariah, being older in years, did not believe Gabriel. Because of his unbelief, Gabriel closed his lips and told him he would not be able to speak until the baby was born. Elizabeth became pregnant and did not leave her house for 5 months.

When the baby was born, their friends and relatives came over and said they should name the baby Zechariah, after his father. Elizabeth said "no" and turned to her husband. Zechariah wrote the baby's name, his name would be John. Immediately, Zechariah could speak! Zechariah began prophesying and spoke about all the things Jesus would do.

Zechariah's response to Jesus was gladness and acceptance that He would be the Messiah. For more on this story, you can review the passage in Luke 1

If you were Zechariah, how do you think you would respond to Gabriel telling you that you would have a baby in your old age?
