The Jesus I Never Knew

I recently finished reading, "The Jesus I Never Knew" by Philip Yancey. It came recommended by a few friends and I am so glad I read it.

In this book, Yancey describes the journey he took to understand Jesus Christ. He used the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John), as the basis for his research. During this research he signed up to teach a class about who Jesus was. In this class, He reviewed 16 movies and analyzed how they portrayed Jesus. He determined this Jesus was not the Jesus spoken of in the Gospels.

The book is a detailed overview of the life of Jesus, including Jewish culture and how Jesus' life would have looked.

There are not enough words to describe the feelings I have after reading this book. It has opened my eyes to seeing Jesus in a new way, perhaps the way He actually is.

A question that I've always had: Does God care? was discussed in this book. Yancey points out that Jesus is God's answer to that question. Jesus lived life as a man and had human compassions. How much more compassion must he have had being the Son of God and knowing his eventual death (and resurrection) to save mankind? Yes, Jesus cared, therefore, God cares.

"God is not the unmoved Absolute, but rather the Loving One who draws near" (p. 161)

"No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same" (p. 25)

"In Jesus, God found a way of relating to human beings that did not involve fear" (p. 38)

"We matter to God" (p. 159)

I would recommend this book to someone who wants to know more about Jesus. This book is not for someone who wants to know more about acting/looking good or church politics. I loved that this book has given me a new picture of Jesus--who He was and is--to carry with me in life.

"According to Jesus what I think about him and how I respond will determine my destiny for all eternity" (p. 17)

I'm happily listing this book as the Book that Changed my Life today because knowing who Jesus is matters more than any other belief I have.

Have you read The Jesus I Never Knew? What book has changed your life?
